Count Lev Nikolaevich Tolstoy
|
In his latest years, Tolstoy's philosophy was somehow
similar to Thoreau's boosting
non-violence as the proper response to aggression, putting
great emphasis on fair treatment of the poor and working
class.
Tolstoy was also rejecting then the State institution when
seeking answers to questions of morality, like Proudhon, but
was believing firmly in God.
The Kingdom of God is Within You influenced Gandhi to the
idea of non-resistance to evil.
Rousseau's Confessions had an
immense influence on him.

Tolstoy describes his young age in A Confession:
"I cannot recall those years without horror, loathing, and
heart-rending pain. I killed people in war, challenged men
to duels with the purpose of killing them, and lost at
cards; I squandered the fruits of the peasants' toil and
then had them executed; I was a fornicator and a cheat.
Lying, stealing, promiscuity of every kind, drunkenness,
violence, murder - there was not a crime I did not
commit...Thus I lived for ten years."

In A Confession, Tolstoy wrote: Or "I would
reflect on how the people might attain prosperity, and I
would suddenly ask myself, "What concern is it of mine?" or
in the middle of thinking about the fame that my works were
bringing me I would say to myself, "Very well, you will be
more famous than Gogol, Pushkin, Shakespeare, Moliere, more
famous than all the writers in the world - so
what? And I could find absolutely no reply."
