Forster's life was one of studies and
travels.
His father, an architect, died
when of consumption when Forster was almost two years
old. His mother Lily gave him the awareness of
injustice and the sense of propriety that appears in his
novels. He travelled to Italy, Greece,Germany,
Egypt and India, becoming very acquainted with India in
particular. In Italy, he lived for several
years, (like Goethe and Shelley) These travels
provided many of the backgrounds and situations for his
novels and stories.
